A new speaker of the Iraqi Parliament is expected to be elected today

According to several sources told Iraqi media: The Iraqi parliament has agreed to hold an extraordinary session today to elect a new speaker.

According to the information, Salim Isawi has been nominated for the post of speaker of the Iraqi parliament. According to sources, most political parties support Salem Isawi to be elected as a speaker of parliament.

So far, the Taqadum Party, led by Mohammed Halbusi, has not reacted to the move of Syada, and Al-Azm Alliances, while Halbusi's party has a Sunni majority in parliament and considers the post his share.

On May 18, Shaalan Karim withdrew from running for the post of speaker of parliament, without giving any reason.

With the Sunni parties yet to reach an agreement on a candidate for the post of speaker, it seems that the issue will now be resolved only by a vote in parliament.

It is unclear which Sunni party's candidate will replace Mohammed Halbusi as speaker of parliament, because Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish parties do not have a complete consensus on the candidates.

On November 14, the Iraqi Supreme Court removed Mohammed al-Halbousi's membership in parliament, leaving it without a speaker for nearly six months.
